Mechanical Design Engineer

Columbus Instruments is searching for a creative and organized engineer who will research, develop, design, innovate and test a wide range of mechanical equipment, both as standard products and with custom features, for instrumentation used for life science, metabolic and environmental research.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with design, sales and marketing team and coordinate with electronic and software engineers to create design sketches, layouts, and schematics.
  • Create new products and designs, revise existing products, and provide installation support by writing technical operation documentation.
  • Identify and recognize customer problems and creatively invent and design solutions that are ergonomically effective and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Use 2D and 3D computer-assisted design (CAD) software such as Autodesk Inventor to create preliminary and detailed geometry and mechanical drawings of the product.
  • Produce specifications for products and choose raw materials and components to be used in production while keeping in mind the budget and timelines.
  • Develop cost estimates based on specifications and coordinate with suppliers.
  • Build models and prototypes of the product and test the design.
  • Develop control systems and monitor production.
  • Assist in the development of sales, marketing, production, quality control and service documentation.
  • Be actively involved in product development and strategic planning of the company.
  • Research and keep up with the dynamic technology and trends in the mechanical design spectrum.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and/or Industrial Design or equivalent experience required.
  • 3 - 5 years of experience with mechanical design software required.
  • Excellent mechanical, analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Out of box thinker that can create custom solutions that resolve customer problems.
  • Autodesk Inventor experience a plus.
  • Precision mechanics experience a plus.
  • Experience designing scientific instrumentation a plus.
  • Biomedical background is a plus.
